TGIF

March 21st, 2008

It’s Friday evening and we’ve started our trip home. The kids are fired up, the adults are tired. Today’s trip to Arlington was very somber, and the trip to the Franciscan Monastery was very eye-opening also. It’s Good Friday and I’m sure it’s a Good Friday we soon won’t forget.

To the parents of RB band students who are reading this, you can be very proud of your kids. They were great these past five days. Im Sure when they get home you’ll have many stories. When and if you hear about Lenny, Tina or Janice, they were our extra driver and guides. The stories will probably be over exaggerated, but then we will remember their part on our trip. It’s good to be headed home.

Thursday Reflections

March 20th, 2008

The Band members put on a gutsy performance today at Sylvan Theater next to the Washington Monument. There were high winds (gusts to 40 mph) and it was chilly, but the kids were awesome! We were very proud of them - their hands were freezing, some of their sheet music blew away, and they still played great. The passers by seemed to enjoy the concert and shared many positive comments. The afternoon tour of the Holocaust Museum was very moving. There were so many horrible things documented about the Holocaust and they are creatively displayed in the museum. Everyone in our tour group seemed deeply moved by the exhibits.

Technical Difficulties

March 20th, 2008

The RBBIC Website has had technical difficulties. We will get more Blog entries up as soon as possible. We had rain (not like Ohio) and canceled our performance yesterday (Wed, 3/19). We are in the bus on our way to our Washington Monument, Sylvan Theater performance. All are well and having fun. More Later …

Natalie’s View of Wednesday

March 19th, 2008

Hello Roger Bacon Band family and friends! We started our second day of the trip in DC with a visit to the Capitol Building. Touring with Steve Chabot’s aides, we soaked up sights of the center of legislature, including the beautiful rotunda with its fabulous ceiling paintings and the chamber where the House of Representatives of the Current Congress sit (it’s the 110th Congress, in case you were wondering).

After leaving the Capitol, we headed to the Natural History Museum where I saw the stunning Hope Diamond and discovered that some time in the human history, I was, in fact, taller than average.

Unfortunately, rain forced us to cancel our concert a the World War II Memorial. Instead, however, we ventured to the National Air and Space Museum, my personal favorite museum so far. We were able to see the Wright Brothers’ original flyer, attempt to “land” on an aircraft carrier, and learn all about the Apollo missions that carried human kind to the moon, and not to mention, peruse the expansive gift shop.

Even though the concert had to be canceled, it was another great (and long!) day here in our Nation’s Capitol.

Washington at Night

March 18th, 2008

After a filling dinner at McGill’s (lots of pasta and salad), we departed for an evening tour of selected DC monuments.  THOUSANDS of viewers and tourists  out tonight.  We went to The Jefferson Memorial, The Korean War Memorial (spooky-the faces of the soldier statues are alive), and the The Lincoln Memorial.  The high point was seeing three Marine 1 helicopters come in low and slow in front of the Washington Monument.  Two peeled off as decoys and the other went to the White House.  We were on the front steps of the Lincoln when one veered away and was “close enough to touch” as it banked away.

NOw safely tucked away in the hotel.

Early call tomorrow as we have a 9:00 tour of the Capitol and later (weather permitting) a concert at the WWII Memorial.

Good night.

Successful 1st Day in DC So Far

March 18th, 2008

We got to sit in and listen to the President’s Own band rehearse for an upcoming performance. Everyone was VERY impressed with the group and their playing. From there we visited Mt. Vernon (George Washington’s home). We had plenty of time for everyone to get through pretty much all there was to see and eat. We’re on our way to Magill’s for dinner and then the evening sightseeing tour. More later …

We’re Off!

March 17th, 2008

Everyone was on time and ready to go.  What else would you expect on St. Patrick’s Day.  After a prayer by Mr. Starkey we were off and running.  Next stop Wheeling, WV, not for Cabellas, but for a rest stop.  More later …
